Mid-June to early October is ideal for the full circuit, when both the Manali-Kaza (Kunzum Pass) and Shimla-Kinnaur-Kaza routes are open. Winter (December-February) is possible via the Kinnaur route for snow-desert landscapes, but with limited facilities.
There are two main routes: Manali to Kaza via Kunzum Pass (shorter but only open June-October), and Shimla to Kaza via Kinnaur (longer but accessible for more of the year). Many travellers do the full loop, entering from one side and exiting the other.
Indian nationals do not need a special permit for most of Spiti Valley, but foreign nationals require a Protected Area Permit for areas near the Indo-Tibet border such as Kaurik and parts of the upper valley, which we help arrange.
Chandratal is accessible by a motorable road from the Manali side (via Kunzum Pass) during the summer season. Camping directly at the lake is now restricted; designated campsites a short distance away are used instead, which we arrange as part of the itinerary.
Kaza sits at roughly 3,650 metres, and villages like Komic and Langza go higher still. We build in acclimatisation time and recommend a gradual ascent rather than a rushed one-day entry to the valley.
